Return of the Condor Heroes

The ROCH is one of my all time favourite Jin Yong story, & the TVB adaptation of 1995 remains my number 1 series! The latest China version starring Huang Xiao Ming & Liu Yi Fei was aired recently & there are many debates regarding which is the best version. Most entertainment forums are discussing this issue & most are enduring war of words between posters in order to protect their own favourite versions.

The ROCH has many remakes from many countries. Only a few are notably carrying bigger impact to the ROCH fans. They include:

1. 1983 TVB version - starring Andy Lau & Idy Chan
2. 1995 TVB version - starring Louis Koo & Carman Lee
3. 1998 Taiwan version - starring Richie Ren & Jacqueline Ng
4. 1998 Singapore version - starring Christopher Lee & Fann Wong
5. 2006 China version - starring Huang Xiao Ming & Liu Yi Fei

ROCH83
- i didn't really finish this series, saw part of it & gave up! maybe b'coz this series is an old production where everything from makeup, settings etc looked so outdated. the artistes have darker complexions & didn't look like chinese (i don't mean to be racist!). is it due to the make up or lightings or any other reasons? anyway, since i'm born in the 80's, the 80's production is quite alien to me. i haven't really seen most of the stars at that period & not fond of them too!

ROCH95
- like mentioned above, this is my all time favourite! gotta be honest that this low budget production has fake props & settings & non-spectecular choreography. however, the casting of Louis & Carman is the main attraction. i think they shared great chemistry & look the most compatible Yang Guo & Xiao Long Nu. I've written a
review on this series, so anyone of you who wants more details can refer to it.

A cute picture of Louis & Carman. I think they look awesome together!

ROCH98 (Taiwan)
- well, this is the most shocking version of all! can you imagine XLN in a black costume?
i'm sorry but i just can't accept it!!! With Cheng Pei Pei as the producer, we can expect something unexpectable b'coz she likes to change things & be "innovative". However, changing the trademark of XLN is a no-no, moreover changing from white to black! many ROCH fans cannot accept it either & i think it's an insult to Jin Yong... And oh, i don't think Richie Ren has what it takes to be YG. He's not that handsome & doesn't have the charisma. the whole package just isn't right!

ROCH98 (S'pore)
- this series is not widely viewed as it is a s'porean production. i think Fann Wong is acceptable as XLN, but Christopher Lee looks more like a scholar than the smart & mischievious YG. couldn't remeber much on this series as i've watched it for quite some time ago.

ROCH06
- one thing about grand productions in china, they boast breathtaking sceneries. i must admit the backgrounds and settings are well setup. One of the
annoying factors is, it seems wind is quite strong in the series as you can always see their hair & costumes flying. the fighting choreography doesn't impress me either as it was manipulated by CG. Can hardly see the kungfu moves anymore. sigh...
- Huang Xiao Ming is quite handsome, but i just dislike the way he protrays young YG, maybe i'm influenced by Louis' YG. The thing that i hate most is his hairstyle. How can you perceive YG as a handsome & attractive guy when he's always left unkempt! i see him more like a beggar than a swordsman... u may argue that he's not wealthy nor a scholar, but please brush your hair , for goodness sake! As for Liu Yi Fei, she's considered pretty but lacks the mature factor... As most people have commented, she has always look younger than YG, even when he was stilll a teenager!
- another negative factor is the way chinese speak, they are so slangy and are mostly dubbed. this puts me off as i cannot distinguish if that's their original voices or someone else's?!

I still like the ROCH95 even though it is now 11 years old. Maybe i'm biased since that was the 1st version of ROCH that i've watched. Let's wait & see if TVB is ever gonna remake this series...
